Expanding the Movie Universe
Honestly, Uwe Albrecht MD, creator of innerwise didn’t have much to comment on movie trends. They are not his thing. However, we have seen him over the years create his own film, use vimeo, youtube and facebook live plus take advantage of platforms for video recording with his team.
These may have a different category then movie trends but could be argued that it falls into similar communication arts media. Let’s take a look deeper into the film industry as a form of art.
There is no doubt that a film should be treated as a distinct form of art, the most modern of the fine arts. It links with the other arts like music, dance and drama, but it has its separate artistic individuality. With its wide range of depiction and with the University of its Appeal, it has numerous probabilities. It must not be overlooked that the film industry, today has become one of the major industries in this country and consequently the box-office aspect is likely to overshadow its artistic aspect. The movie industry is going through some vast and rapid changes, and for the best, the overall climate is favorable for the companies. The record global box office record of 2015 is said to be around $38.2 billion and it looks like 2016 is on the track to deliver much more than this, all thanks to the development.
Growth in China and other markets is changing the game
The past decade has seen a lot of appreciation and development at the box office but the threats from piracy and online streaming services have yet to play out in global ticket sales. That is partially because the worldwide performance has camouflaged domestic box office totals that have remained constant over the past five years, with an increase in ticket prices which brings about a decline in ticket volume. It can be said that a wider range of entertainment alternatives is sponsoring a lack of domestic box office growth. Meanwhile, growth in China and India is exploding, with the former country expected to become the world’s biggest film market in 2017.
The rapid expansion of the vast market is focusing Hollywood resources into overseas production. In fact, China currently allows 34 foreign releases to screen in the country on an annual basis, while co-productions and movies produced exclusively in China face fewer restrictions.
Movie universe is expanding
The expanded and diverse film universe format popularized and promoted by comic book adaptations has become one of the essential content strategies of the biggest film studios, and 2016 could be the biggest year on record for superheroes and other expanded universes. This year has been the release of six big budget superhero movies, more than ever before. Fox’s recently released Deadpool is a spin-off of the X-Men universe and the first blockbuster hit of the year. Fox was also planning to release Gambit in early October, but has removed the picture from its 2016 slate and announced to release it next year. Sony will attempt to use Spider-Man’s appearance in Disney films to build a successful foundation for its own expanded franchise built around its most valuable comic book license.
Blockbusters are benefiting from premium formats, while smaller pictures find life online. In addition to the international growth and development, a strong showing for premium formats will also work to make the total box office haul in 2016 the largest on record. Out of the 34 American-produced films allowed to screen in China annually, 14 spots are set aside for releasing in premium formats, motivating and allowing major franchise pictures to enter this way and taking the average ticket prices up.
As movie chains focus on differentiating their entertainment offerings by the medium of premium screens, smaller pictures are having a difficult time standing out at multiplexes but finding numerous possibilities through online distribution. Small to mid-budget movies are reaching large audiences online. These companies are displaying original content themselves and when combined with other favorable film industry movie trends, it brings huge profits to the industry.
